If your home loan is FHA insured, that means that it has been secured by the FHA, which is underneath the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). None of the money in the loan is provided by the FHA. What the FHA does is ensure that the loan is insured in case the borrower defaults on his or her loan obligations. The FHA and their loan programs are designed to assist low-to-moderate income consumers by easing credit requirements. Different from the VA appraiser panel, the lending agency working with Federal Housing Administration is allowed to select the appraiser.

Down payments are often lower with an FHA loan despite using conventional market rates. Consumers with lower incomes or less starting funds to use as a down-payment on a financial transaction benefit the most from FHA loan programs.
